I know there is a lot of confusion and FEAR right now and I am not a health professional so my opinion is not relevant here as we all worry about the Covid-19 pandemic that is threatening the world.
I am a big fan of TEDTalks (Technology, Entertainment, Design – ideas worth spreading) because the information usually comes from professionals who are at the top of their fields and are highly respected by their peers. (Which in this day and age is a critical component.)
This is NOT fake news or a ploy for media ratings:
I think the big take away is that only 20% of people who contract this will need medical care. It has mild symptoms for most people, but it is easily spread, and the elderly population and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk. If you happen to fall into one of these categories then self-quarantine may help you from coming in contact with the virus. This is why events are being canceled – the spread.
“The best thing we all can do is wash your hands (A LOT) and if you feel sick, stay home!“
Alanna Shaikh
As of today (3/14/20), around 55 people have died in the United States from the Covid-19 virus, and there is a widespread lack of facts and misinformation about the illness and it is creating widespread panic. Any number of people is a heartbreaking tragedy and shows some serious holes in our health care system, but it is not time to freak out. Most people will not die from this if they come in contact with the virus.
Social Distancing & Canceling Events
We are at a time of crisis, and uncertainty – but let’s not make any assumptions: (again I am not a doctor and I do not play one on TV)
“What we know is that they’re [the droplets] are better at staying afloat when the air is cold and dry, ” says McGraw. “When the air is humid and warm, [the droplets] fall to the ground more quickly, and it makes transmission harder.”
Elizabeth McGraw, who directs the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Nancy Messionnier of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, “I think it’s premature to assume that,” she said during a call with reporters on Wednesday. “We haven’t been through even a single year with this pathogen.”
Given the uncertainty, public health officials say they must plan for the unexpected and for the possibility that the outbreak drags on regardless of the weather.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed and our thoughts positive that the warm sun, all that vitamin D will protect us all from this new virus.
Anyone who has been on the farm know…it is HOT AS BALLS and only the hardcore can survive that HEAT!
The WOOKFlu is pretty common after attending a festival, but once you get some rest and give yourself a little self-care – most people will start feeling as good as new after a few days. Again, only a small percent of people have to go to the doctor to get over the wookflu, and it seems despite all the media hype, Covid-19 seems to the same – most of the symptoms are mild, for most people. If you have a high fever then it is time to seek medical attention.
Let’s hope this one runs its course just as SARS, MERS, and Ebola and is not as lethal and scary as all the hype is making it out to be.
That being said, list of canceled and postponed events are staking up:
Live Nation to Stop All Tours Due to Coronavirus Concerns – around the country
Many municipalities are also imposing a 250- 500 Person Cap On Events Amid Coronavirus Spread
So far it seems the protocol is calling for the cancelation of large gatherings (250 – 500) through April 30, 2020. This includes most schools and many businesses and organizations are following this by self-mandated closure and asking people to work from home.
I am going to do my best to keep my 2020 Festival list updated as we hear more announcements about the state of 2020 festival season. Hopefully, most shows and festivals will just be postponed and the cold season will be over once it gets warmer.
One LOVE Y’all!

Hopefully, you got your hands on some tickets! If not, don’t despair… Check out my blog about festivaling for FREE and remember the 2020 festival season is full of amazing experiences. If you and your croo did not get tickets to ROO, just check out my festival list and have an alternative plan. Festival season 2020 has something for everyone and festival planning is one of my favorite things to look forward to…so keep going…
Who needs to get in shape for Roo? Who wants to feel better, have more energy, sex drive, motivation, and less depression? Hello! It is not that hard people. This has nothing to do with what you look like, the size you wear or how your bathing suit fits…this is about living your BEST life to the fullest every day! Not just a few days in the Summer.
Personally, I have been on a little adventure and I have been learning about letting go and breathing it all out. Working it out, being more flexible and trying to harness the feeling like I need to go run around the block. Energy levels at an all-time high and it has everything to do with being in MOTION!
What was Newton’s first law?
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
You know it is the law of the universe, y’all – you have the power – just use the FORCE!
FLOW • ENERGY • VIBRATION
Turn on that love light and make sure you shine some of it on you!
You got to take the time…for you! Maybe eat a watermelon or a banana or two!
What is your goal? Want to go climb a mountain? Skydive naked from an airplane? or run an 8-minute mile? Be able to walk a mile? (it is going to be a packed FARM!) How about just fit those shorts you had last year or just have more energy…
Any amount of exercise will help you achieve it!
Think it into existence
Speak it into existance
Write it into existence
Work it into existence

A level for everyone!
You don’t even need equipment or weights; just use water bottles or cans!
HASfit has videos for all fitness levels so for the next 100 days you have no excuse, even if you are a beginner, they have a great place to start with this beginner cardio video.
I discovered HASfit when I was searching online for ways to relieve Sciatic nerve pain and the stretches in their video saves me after those long road trips. (and we will all need it after the road trip to ROO) They also have great videos for every part of your body so check them out on:

It’s almost that time. March is right around the corner and the Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival is back in action! Bassnectar & Tipper! Vampire Weekend & Mumford & Son! This lineup truly has something for everyone.
If you live for the late-night action, Incendia & Jungle 51 will keep the music going till the break of dawn all weekend.
Weather
Don’t just think, “Oh Florida, palm trees and sunshine we’ll be good”. It will be cold! I mean it, in ‘17 & ‘18 I could see my breath each night and would be shivering if I didn’t have on long pants and an insulated jacket. Don’t be fooled by the tropical scenes & scantily clad kids they show in the marketing videos! The moisture in the air makes it feel much colder than the actual temperature would suggest. Always remember the Boy Scout motto, “Be Prepared”.
Be sure to bring a good water-proof tent and batten down those hatches, it usually rains every day in Florida!
As you are still planning and not sure what to bring, here is our downloadable/printable checklist so you can make sure you don’t forget anything for your festival camp. And take advantage of FREE-TWO-day shipping for PRIME Members!
YES Non-professional flash/still cameras and hand-held video cameras (e.g., Sony Action Cam, GoPro, Polaroid)
YES Personal food
YES Personal misting fan with a bottle no larger than 1.5L (must be empty upon entry)
YES Personal-size battery-powered speakers
YES Personal-size pool floaties (made for no more than one adult)
YES Plastic mirrors
YES Physician-prescribed
medication that is not expired (must show physician’s prescription and
consult with a safety officer upon entry)
YES Reusable water bottles (must be empty at entry)
YES Small, portable propane grills/stoves* with small tanks, up to 4 lbs per group
(propane bottles that are part of your RV/camping trailer’s internal system are OK, even if they exceed 4 lbs)
YES Sunscreen lotion (inspected upon entry)
YES Tampons and pads (must be sealed upon entry)
YES Wagons
YES Wind chairs/sofas (must be deflated upon entry)
Getting around
Bring multiple pairs of comfortable shoes, multiple pairs of socks for each day, and some moleskin patches.
Moleskin is the best way to handle blisters & shoe friction problems. It’s like putting on a new layer of skin and has been my saving grace countless times while backpacking. It helps to prevent blisters but also protects the ones that have already accumulated from getting worse. You’ll be doing so much walking each day you’re gonna wanna massage/stretch out your feet whenever you get the chance.
Pedicabs
If you’re too tired to walk back, there will be plenty of bicycle-powered rickshaws you can pay to give you rides all the way to your tent.
You can now bring BIKES, SCOOTERS & SKATEBOARDS to Okeechobee!!! In past years only pedicabs could have any sort of wheeled way of getting around, not anymore!! While the majority of the site is grass/sand there are paved paths lining most areas as can be seen on the map. So dust off those olds wheels in your garage and ride again!
Maps
There’s one notable difference in the map layout for 2020 compared to 2018’s layout. Instead of having the 3 main stages (BE, HERE & NOW) within the center Grove of trees, in 2020 the HERE stage will be closer to the area considered to be Chobeewobee Village. It’ll be interesting to see what the security situation is for the HERE stage now that it’s outside of the Grove because in years past the stages in The Grove were the only ones you had to go through a security/bag check to get to.

I believe Mumford & Sons closing out Sunday night is a great way to send off the crowd on a tame & wholesome sound after a wild fast-paced weekend. It would be a nightmare for the crews onsite getting people to leave on Monday if say Bassnectar was to close out Sunday night. If you’re a big Mumford & Sons fan this might be the performance to catch because their sound is kind of an outlier on this heavily electronic lineup.
I can see a lot of people leaving Sunday morning which would mean a thin crowd for Mumford! Remember this is only speculation, but this was the case for the Arcade Fire Sunday closer in 2018. I got there just as it started and was able to pretty much walk right up to the front.
With the schedule yet to be released, there are still several questions to be answered. TBD…
But here is a little taste with this Spotify playlist:

I don’t know about you but once the cold weather sets in and I am stuck inside I start to go a bit stir crazy! For me, the only thing that keeps me “Radiating Positivity” all winter long is dreaming about all the fun times this Summer and planning for the Summer festival season.
Personally, I’m trying to keep my head from exploding from all of these festival lineup announcements! 2020 is going to be one festival season that really has amazing festival experiences for any musical tastes and the lineups announced so far are really star-packed.
While we are still waiting for the lineup for LOCKN’, there have been quite a few announcements that are definitely worth talking about. A few that are absolutely STACKED and a few that left much desired.
Recent Headliner Announcements
Bonnaroo 2020 came in hard this year with a heavy metal headliner, TOOL that had not released an album in 13 years and the first female headliner, Lizzo.
For some, these two headliners may be relatively new, but both have been around for quite some time, and now it is the time for them to shine. I don’t think you could ever come up with two performers who are so diverse and who are loved by two very different fan bases. You know it is going to be GOOD as HELL!
Tool fans awaited the 2019 release of Fear Inoculum – and after 13 years of the band’s hiatus, the band became the first act ever to have a song in every spot of Billboard‘s Top 10 Rock Sales chart. And any fan can tell you why…
If you have never listened to TOOL, I suggest you start here: TOOL – Reflection off of Lateralus and then work your way back to the angrier and savage releases of the ’90s, to get familiar and only then you should relish the evolved sound of Fear Inoculum. Here is a link to the full song list for Tool – Lateralus.
Those who know and love Lizzo, are aware that she dropped multiple albums in 2013 and 2015 before her first major-label release. In 2019, she grabbed the attention and the spotlight has not left this talented lady. Here is the album playlist that started it all:
The other acts further down the bill include Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, Vampire Weekend, The 1975, Run The Jewels, Megan Thee Stallion, Brittany Howard, Tenacious D, Leon Bridges, Jason Isbell, and The 400 Unit, Young Thug, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, the Grand Ole Opry featuring special guests, DaBaby, Grace Potter, Nelly, Pinegrove, Slowthai, Nilüfer Yanya, Orville Peck and Yaeji, with many others. This year the Superjam comes courtesy of North Carolina electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso. Here is the Spotify Playlist:
Something for Everyone
No matter where you live in the US, there definitely is a festival for everyone. A few more announcements that I have to mention is Governors Ball in NY – with headliners like Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks, Vampire Weekend, Ellie Goulding, Miley Cyrus, Portugal the Man to highlight just a few.
The Peach Festival in Scranton, PA, started by The Allman Brothers Band always brings the jammiest bands for the celebration at the Pavilion at Montage Mountain and Montage Mountain Ski Resort. And as you can see the lineup is STACKED.
And we can’t forget one of my favorites in Virginia, Floyd Fest which received top honors (once again) in Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine’s ‘Best of the Blue Ridge 2020:’ “Best Festival Overall” and “Best Kid-Friendly Festival” They also snagged Runner-Up honors for the following: “Best Kid-Friendly Adventure”, so if you have little ones and have always wanted to experience a music festival with them, this is the BEST one to enjoy. This one is also an all-volunteer run so definitely check it out if you have some free time in July.
This year LOCK’N Festival instead of August, they have moved the date to June 19 – 21, 2020 to celebrate Phil Lesh’s Birthday (from the Grateful Dead).
This one is definitely TOP of my list. Nestled on a farm in the mountains of Virginia, I have seen some of the BEST performances of my life at this festival over the years. Jam fans and Virginia is waiting for them to Announce this one. Fingers crossed for Stevie Nicks and Widespread Panic.
NOW is the BEST time to start planning your festival camp!
Looking at my 2020 Festival List can definitely give anyone some serious FOMO and can leave you BROKE if you just pick one! That is why I set up this website, after 12 times on the farm in Tennessee and countless other music festivals around the country, I have learned to pack light and to always take the BEST festival gear. This website recommends my top gear suggestions and helps to find the BEST prices on four and five stars Amazon products to save you some cash as you get ready to FESTIVAL!
Stay warm out there everybody as Jack Frost is nippin, and as we hibernate, and dream about the summer festival season I hope this gives you some inspiration to start planning and to make a decision.
I know where I am going! I’ve got my hands up they’re playing my song … nodding my head like YEAH…IT’S A PARTY IN THE USA!

It is going to be one amazing festival season this year and I am already counting down the days until I can run barefoot in the grass on the FARM!
For me here in RVA, the season says it should be cold, but I was barefoot’n yesterday. Which is very unusual, but we all know this is a sign of the times so as I anticipate and some, suffer through the winter days, I have plenty of good Spotify playlists for you to listen to as you try to figure out what festivals will be on your calendar for 2020. And for some of you who already have your tickets in hand ((lucky you!)), you can listen too! (Playlists at the end)
This year I have a new website that features all the must-have gear you need for your next music festival and it will help you find the BEST prices on Amazon. I have a downloadable/printable checklist so you can start preparing now!
On my 2020 Festival List page, I have compiled a list of some of my favorite camping music festivals and the links to their official websites so you can buy from them directly (unlike some other fest sites) and you can check out the 411 on all the FESTS you are interested in.
A Few Honorable Mentions
While we still await the announcements of a few of the BIG ones, there are a few who have already announced and definitely need an honorable mention as you plan where you spend your money this festival season.
April 2020
One I definitely have to mention is Sweetwater 420 Festival! If you have never been to this festival in Atlanta, it is easy to get to with a flight to the International Airport and a MARTA train ride into the city.
THE LINE UP IS STELLAR JAM FANS!!!
Atlanta in May usually has mild weather and will be a nice place for all you Phish phans to school to at the beginning of Summer. I was lucky enough to catch both Trey Anastasio Band and Joe Russo’s last year at Lock’n and I was pleasantly entertained by both, and they both put on a great show. No one can say JR is just is a cover band, they will melt your face off.
Two definitely to keep an eye on are Shaky Knees, and Hangout! Booth features a really great selection of bands like Smashing Pumpkins, The Strokes, Joan Jett, and Portugal the MAN for Shaky.
Hangout is not only on the beach at Gulf Shores but features RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS, Post Malone, Billie Eilish, and Lana Del Ray. All who come as a recommended MUST SEE if you can get down to Alabama. Plus it is just a nice time of year for a visit…not too hot and humid. (Update – Hear this one is SOLD OUT! Good luck getting tix!)
For my metal fans out there Epicenter, Rockville, and Sonic Temple have lineups that will leave your ears ringing for days! With dueling double nights of METALLICA, layered in with various other classic heavy metal noisemakers like Deftones, Disturbed, and Slipknot heading up the other days mixed in with a lot of amazing acts, any of these FESTS will give you a nice metal injection.
Last year Rockville did not disappoint, but they have changed it up this year and are heading to Daytona Beach. If you pick any one of the 4 they look like any of them will be some major mosh filled fun.
Speaking of GOOD EAR plugs
I shopped all-around and found high fidelity earplugs that reduce volume levels with absolutely no loss of sound quality, clarity, or muffling. They are powerful hearing protection with up to 25 decibels of sound reduction (25 SNR), one of the highest levels available in the market. They have a low profile, they are clear, and most of all you can HEAR CRISP CLEAR ACOUSTICS – This is one of my top recommended MUSIC FESTIVAL ESSENTIALS – for under $30 on Amazon
The last two I have to mention are smaller festivals you may have never heard of before but they are two that really are worth checking out. Rooster Walk in Martinsville, VA and DelFest in Cumberland, MD. Both feature beautiful festival grounds and are very special small festivals compared to some of the other bigger East Coast fests.
The 12th annual Rooster Walk Music & Arts Festival will take place May 21-24, 2020 at Pop’s Farm, located in the rolling countryside surrounding Martinsville, Va. Rooster Walk is a 4-day festival celebrating music, art, and the great outdoors at the idyllic Pop’s Farm venue. With roughly 50 bands performing on 6 different stages, an eclectic roster of great music guides the Rooster Walk experience. The VA locals know this is the place to be at the end of May!
DelFest, Memorial Day Weekend always has amazing line ups for anyone who loves the sound of banjos and pickers and this year is will be no exception. With names like Billy Strings, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, The Infamous String Dusters, and Old Crow Medicin Show, and more to be announced, this one is a gem! The DelFest grounds also include a lazy river where you can TUBE and float down the river while you enjoy the music.
June 2020
I don’t know about you but I am not any good at the clues for Bonnaroo, and I have not been keeping up with them, but I am really anticipating this lineup! I am still editing video footage from last year, but I promise to post my videos of the Astronaut, the parachute, the dinosaur and me as the winter winds on and I am indoors daydreaming of those sunny days in JUNE!
This year LOCK’N Festival has thrown fans a curveball… instead of August, they have moved the date to June 19 – 21, 2020 to celebrate Phil Lesh’s Birthday (from the Grateful Dead)
If you have not been, this one is definitely TOP of my list. It reminds me of the same vibe as the first few Bonnaroo’s. Nestled on a farm in the mountains of Virginia, I have seen some of the BEST performances of my life at this festival over the years. We will have to see the lineup. Only time will tell.
I’ve heard rumors of Tool and RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS at ROO…
and
Tedeschi Trucks Band and WIDESPREAD PANIC at LOCK’N and I will be following these announcements closely!
It looks like I will be up ALL NIGHT for weeks!
I could keep going but these 3 months alone can break anyone’s bank account and there is plenty of time for me to blog about more music festivals and my insider guide articles the rest of 2020, so stay tuned!
I am super excited about the upcoming year and I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Peace and Love!

A quick recap and some speculation as to why it will not return.
I know it has been a minute since we were all rocking out at the FARM, and I’m sure you have just heard about the NO return for 2020 and I wanted to do a little research to see what I could find out.
This inaugural lineup was packed with dozens of big-name hard rock and metal acts that performed on three stages, with 12 hours of live music each day!
It is really hard to put into words a blog that can recap this festival! Let me tell you, music lovers, it was freaking EPIC!!!!
It was definitely a different farm!
While sharing the grounds of the famous Bonnaroo Farm, the two are nowhere near the same scale and most of the famed landmarks from the Farm such as the mushroom fountain, Snake and Jake’s Christmas Barn and the disco ball were not part of the Exit 111 festival grounds.
Compared to any Bonnaroo adventure I have been on, the Farm was definitely not as crowded or as hyper. The vibe was definitely a lot darker and the crowd was a lot older. It was a sea of black…
There was still some crazy, wild energy and a hell of a lot of enthusiastic fans! With some of the top hard rock and metal acts, including Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Deftones, and so many more, there was a really diverse crowd of people and some serious FANS. Also, being so close to Halloween, it was an amazing opportunity for people watching!
Exit 111 Playlist
For me, the draw to this festival was some of my most favorite hard rock and metal acts of all time, and the chance to get to see some of those performers one more time!
This playlist includes some of my favorite songs from many of the acts, as well as a few new acts that have been getting my playtime.
I would describe this festival as an interesting mix of Southern rock intertwined with heavy metal and a few “Rock” bands from the ’90s.
Friday included: steller performances by Seether, Anthrax, Black Stone Cherry and Bishop Gunn, just name a few of my favs. Then to really kick off this who’s who of rockers, Slayer, slew it! They and their fans get my vote LOUDEST performance and most obnoxious fans continuously screaming SLAYER!
Saturday was a slow start on the Farm as the unprepared festival campers thawed out after the overnight temps dipped into the 30’s. But that day’s line up and the vibe was of excitement and celebration.
Personally, I bounced around and saw so many amazing performances that day, but I would have to say the highlight that day was definitely FEVER 333 and Mastodon!
Sunday was non-stop! The big names alone this day alone could bring out droves of fans, and I have to say each one absolutely ROCKED their respective stages! (that I saw)! This day was stacked!!! I could gush for days over how heavy Lamb of God was, and the amazing stage production of Ghost, or how Chino Moreno and the Sandman (aka Sergio Vega) from the DEFTONES made the crowd jump or any number of the other amazing acts I caught throughout the day. Trust me you really missed out, if you did not make it to this one. Ministry and Gun ‘n Roses at the end really summed it all up for me. That shit was amazing!
As the first non-‘Roo show in park history, I have to say they crushed it with such a stellar, all-star lineup. I definitely had that familiar struggle to see everything and there were some performances I had to miss. The biggest difference I noticed at this festival was the amount of mosh pits and crowd surfing, during the Fever 333 and Deftones show, it was crazy down in the front as the security guards yanked people out of the crowds as they passed overhead.
For anyone who has visited Great Stage Park during the first weekend in June, you know that the ROO campgrounds are endless and the venue includes a center fountain, center roo for the arts and a water slide. Exit 111 had about a third of the main venue fenced off.
I’ll be honest, when I got there, I thought, “OH how empty and quaint!” The Farm was oriented differently and I thought the campground seemed really small. This festival also lacked the usual festival art vendors and the “Center-Roo” action that I always look forward to as part of the Farm festival experience.
The joint effort between AC Entertainment (Bonnaroo) and C3 Presents (Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits), did a great job in 2019 recruiting a line-up like none other and the other attractions include the “Paranormal Cirque” circus tent, a car show, motocross demonstrations and a “mega sports bar” that aired all the big games through the weekend. This one was a one-of-a-kind!
That being said, rumors have it that the ticket sales were nowhere near what was expected and a few weeks before the fest, a lot of tickets were given away to “fill” the campgrounds.
Unlike its big brother, Exit 111 may not have had the draw of some of the popular chart-toppers who frequent the Farm in June and it might not have been as much of a cash cow for Manchester as the Festival in the Summer. I think some of the older artists may not have drawn the crowds that were anticipated.
Sadly, I know there was one death, but not near as many arrests as Roo.
As I started seeing the line-up announcements for some of the other Rock and Metal fests for 2020 like Epicenter, and Sonic Temple…See MY FESTIVAL LIST here…I started to question the ability of Exit 111 to create another seller line-up that could come anywhere close to this one. The next exit may have been crushed by a variety of other festivals who are about to ROCK the Summer of 2020.
Will we ever see Exit 111 again? TBD?
I know I will – the next time I hit that I-24 exit that brings drivers to the Farm!
I’ve seen a lot of posts asking about the weather and how the camping will be for different festivals and you have to prepare for the WORST.
I grew up camping in TN and by the time the Fall rolls around the ground will be getting cold. According to an old farmer’s almanac, you are almost guaranteed that you will not get frost from April 21 through October 10. So for the rest of the festival you better be prepared for some cold nights.
The days will probably be in the comfortable 70’s to 80’s unless there is rain or a chance of a possible thunderstorm then the temps could drop into the low 40’s and especially at night, you might get that nice coating of ice all over everything by morning. So no heat with temps in the 40’s could be quite chilly if you are not prepared.
For TN and VA festivals, I suggest that you prepared for a full range of temperatures and weather!
I think the biggest rookie mistake I see Festival goers commit – they fail to set up a secure tent and pop-up shelter – they focus on having fun and forget that having a secure, dry and upright shelter is pretty crucial if you want to survive a multi-day camping music festival and have the BEST camping experience.
I have been to several-a-roo, or Bonnaroo & Lockn festivals where there was a micro-burst and heavy rainstorm that blew down pop-up shelters and mutilated tents beyond the point of repair which left a bunch of people sleeping in their cars or trying to use duck-tape to salvage bent tents and wet stuff.
I don’t know who’s tent this is, but OUCH!
Don’t let this happen to you!
With a little preparation, you can secure your tent and pop-up like a PRO!
Here are my 8 Pro Tips for Securing your CAMP:
1. Practice setting up before you get there and add waterproofing spray
If you are new to setting up camp or have a new tent or pop-up, you must set it up and make sure everything is good to go before you go. A test run will save you a lot of frustration before you are rushing around trying to figure out the directions.
Once you set it up to grab a can of Scotchgard Outdoor Water Shield to create a durable water barrier that keeps clothing and gear drier longer. This stuff will repel the water, so once everything is soaked, nothing gets in.
Even for an older tent, this stuff will really help keep out the moisture. Not only do I thoroughly coat the top of the tent and the rainfly, but I make sure I get the bottom of the tent and especially any areas the rain fly does not cover. The tent box may say “waterproof” but when there is a torrential downpour for an hour –all manufacturer claims are off, what matters is if you and your stuff stay dry.
2. Tent Stakes REALLY Matter
Tent stakes are usually something no one ever thinks about until they are trying to secure a tent to the earth and then you realize the ones that came with the tent are a bit flimsy and pull right out of the ground. I suggest you replace your tent stakes. I always purchase new tent stakes and have a few extras when I go to a festival.
My favorite tent stakes are lightweight and have reflective ropes so you can see them at night:
When you arrive, before you rock out with your… …. … set up and secure your camp, even if the sun is shining and the forecast calls for no rain, spend the extra time securing your tent and shelter and you will have no worries when the rains come.
Whatever stakes you have, make sure you take the time to really brace the tent to the ground and cinch the rain fly. Check tension by looking to see if seams on the fly line up with the seams and poles on the tent body; if not, readjust tension so that they are aligned.
Stakeout tactics:
You’ll get maximum holding power in most types of soil if the stake is fully vertical as you drive it into the ground.
Leave just enough stake exposed to allow you to slip a tie-down cord over it.
If your tent has a fly, make sure you tie them to the poles. Some come with Velcro straps. Make sure you use them.
A well-pitched tent has a taut rain fly. Most rain flies have straps you can cinch at the tent corners. Snug these evenly and recheck fly tension periodically, especially before crawling in each night, because changing weather affects tautness.
I DEFINITELY recommend the pop-up over your tent or car method because a well-secured pop-up can be so important to help the shelter in place during a thunderstorm. Also, as soon as that hot morning sun hits your tent, it will start to heat up and you will not be able to stay in there long. Adding that extra layer of shade or shelter will make all the difference in staying warm and dry, and cooler during the day.
Rugged design with a large non-slip hook made from heavy-duty plastic and you can 16 of them for under $6 on Amazon! Extras are good!
I have also used these, Galvanized steel stakes and they are sturdy, but the plastic usually breaks on removal. Usually, on every camp trip I tend to lose another one, so be sure and check that you have the right number and maybe grab a few extras before you go!
3. POP-UP SHELTER
Even a simple pop-up like this one can run you around $100 and several years in a row I saw these things get lifted up and tossed about by the high winds or the rain rip through the top panel in a crazy downpour. Some of the more expensive models are more durable and have sandbags and reinforcement tie-downs and I recommend you batten down the hatches the first day when you put these things up!
At LOCKN festival 2019, the silver car in the photo above was impaled by a flying pop-up pole and it broke the passenger side window. There were multiple tents full of water and some just completely collapsed from about 45 minutes of high wind and rain.
Poor guy! This one is DONE!
You have to make use of all the ties, or guy ropes that are attached to the pop-up and use heavy-duty stakes to balance the tension of the pop-up, even adding extra ropes and stakes will keep you from becoming like the Wizard of OZ.
4. Weights
Usually, some of the more expensive model pop-ups come with weights. If yours doesn’t –you might want to consider investing in a set!
5. TARPS
I was just reading a post in the EXIT 111 group on FB and some guy was talking about how many tarps he was bringing. Tarps for the top of the tent, tarps for underneath the tent, tarps for the sides of the pop up for shade, tarps for the ground. Like five or six, obviously dude is a festival PRO because the more tarpsare the better! They are pretty cheap so no need to be a wet rat. Tarps to connect tents, and the space between your pop-ups, tarps to cover your car, stake down that extra tarps over your tent and you can thank me later! Worst case scenario –if it is really raining, just wrap one around you!
6. Waterproof SOLAR lights!
You are also going to need a reliable waterproof lighting source.
I love these solar powered luci Outdoor, rainproof lights. I have several of them and I charge them in my windshield all day while I am gone, hang them on my pack, you never have to buy batteries and I have never run out of light if these charges all day. No fumbling with batteries or wondering if they will run out. The manufacturer video says they will last 18 hours on one charge! These are definitely one of my favorite pieces of gear for camping and hiking…3 of them are plenty of light for cooking, looking at the schedule or other camp activities. They are the BEST!
This topic always makes me a bit nervous because I don’t want to sound negative and start talking shit about WOOKS stealing at festivals, but yeah, it’s a thing. Broke ass, looking for what you got.
Hide your cooler, hide your liquor ’cause some broke ass will take it if they can. Sadly!
I saw some people asking how secure a festival campsite is:
Think of it like 80,000 people could possibly walk by your camp and if you have a bunch of easy money within eyesight or within reach WELL, God bless ’em –I hope they have some money in the bank or your stuff might become a WOOK trophy.
Bottom Line –at any festival my valuables are on me or out of sight and locked in my car.
I have had too many friends who have had cameras, phones, shoes, food, booze, beer and just about anything else just disappear.
I even heard about some Peach Fest thefts this year that included slashing the “gear” pocket, out of the tent in the middle of the night to take phones and wallets. So think about where you stash your valuables when you catch those Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
I’d even get a tent lock for the rest of your gear while you are gone, even if it is just dirty clothes and shoes!
There now that we are all secure.
Out of sight, locked up tight –ain’t no WOOK stealing my stuff tonight!
Well, there you have it, my BEST advice to secure your tent and have the BEST camping experience at a MUSIC FESTIVAL!
If you still are packing and need more tips, be sure and check out my other blogs.
It’s gonna take RESERVE, PERSEVERANCE and just a little patience! See you on the rail! ~WREN
This is what our camp looked like after the storm!
LOCKN’: Blues–Reminiscing About that Mountain Magic
Music Monday – My heart is where the mountains are! It went by way too fast —————->
By far LOCKN’ exceeded my expectations and absolutely satisfied my need for FACE MELTING live music performances and I had the opportunity to be around some of the most amazing people I have ever met. You know if you have been, you will always be part of the family – that vast network of real people who know how to enjoy life and love to live it. Not everyone can do this, but those who festival know every time there are a few moments that make it all worthwhile and I have a few of my favorite to share with you! Once Again, Well Done!
AMAZING GROUNDS and AMAZING VIBES!
Despite the tent crushing storm that blew through and the little bit of rain on a couple of days, the time up in the mountains was perfect! I don’t know about you, but my camp kitchen and shelter held the storm. If you need a new tent, you should check out my other blog: Festival Tent Buying Guide and my other blogs about festival camping.
My favorite thing about going to music festivals is NEW MUSIC DISCOVERY! I mean what else – ?
I love finding something new that speaks to me and gives me some new inspiration to walk away with…I don’t know about you, but I am an artist and I need to be inspired. So my new jams I find at the festivals I attend find their way into my creative flow and my daily playlist.
Maybe it was just the cool dewy day or just the vibe in the air but the voice of Deva Mahal caught my attention and definitely made me move my tired feet.
Over the course of the weekend, I saw some of the most amazing musical collaborations I have ever seen!
Trey Anastasio sitting in with Khruangbin was the perfect way to kick off LOCKN’. Is there anything better than seeing that kind of musicians get together? Personally, I was left speechless and wanting more of that candy!
Next was when Trey Anastasio joined Tedeschi Trucks Band, every time I see this band I am absolutely amazed at the level of musical talent I am witnessing, then add Trey! It was such an amazing set!
They actually played TWO of my ALL-TIME-favorite songs – Derek And The Dominos’ classic song “Layla” and a cover of Jimi Hendrix “Little Wing, which was one of many highlights of a highlight-filled set.
HeadCount’s Participation Row activism village is at the heart of the row and it helps promote local values, and our friends at Ben & Jerry’s help make it possible.
Participation Row is all about creating an incentive through learning about what you can do locally, all while indulging in some sweets and some rock n’ roll prizes.
Headcount a non-partisan voter registration group who partnered with Boulder-based tea company Celestial Seasonings designed a new, Grateful Dead inspired tea blend affectionately named “Ramble on Rose” after the Robert Hunter penned tune. Hopefully, you got active and got some, Ramble on Rose will not be sold by Celestial Seasonings online or in stores. Read LIVE for MUSIC’s article about the tea collab
All in all – Headcount had 8,280 positive actions taken and $30,000+ raised for all the non-profits on Participation Row activism village with help from Ben & Jerry’s!

LOCKN’ is my favorite Summer music festival in Virginia!
This little party in the rolling hills of Nelson County will not disappoint, it is the optimal festival experience and this year was no exception! I hope you have the chance to get to the FARM and if you did not make it you can at least enjoy some of the various streams of the event.
Definitely worth every penny! Subscribe to Relix to stream the LIVE event.

Virginia hosts a variety of summer festivals that are TOP on my list!!
If you have never ventured to this green mountain state, some of the best ways to check out the Summer in Virginia is to attend one of its many music festivals.
The locals say, “Virginia is for music lovers” and the live music scene is robust and vibrant.
Charlottesville, Virginia Beach and in the Capital city, Richmond on any given night there are amazing live performances for your listening pleasure. The Virginia Board of Tourism has an entire website dedicated to all of the festivals and live music in VA.
This blog is all about my favorite CAMPING FESTIVAL in Virginia:
LOCKN’ Festival – August 22 – 25
If you have never been or are just planning to visit again, hopefully, this blog will give a few tips so you don’t miss anything at Virginia’s BEST! I have been counting it down all year! Official Website
The line up is Absolutely STELLAR and STAR PACKED!
For me every year this festival is all about my once-in-a-lifetime chance to get to see the legends that I have sung along with since childhood and the chance to see some of the most smoking hot musicians currently in the music industry on any stage. I mean seriously, y’all, just look at the hours of pure unadulterated listening bliss!
Yes, it is HOT in August in Virginia. Yes, it is Summer camping with no AC, well, unless you are in VIP and/or have an RV. But you should really suck it up buttercup and think about that cool breeze in those mountains and the music that NEVER STOPS!
Out of all of the festivals that I have been to, this one is SO worth it and I highly recommend it to music lovers of all ages and families. This little party in the rolling hills of Nelson County will not disappoint, it is the optimal festival experience and this year will be no exception! There is no one act that I cannot wait to see!
I mean what a line up: I can’t mention everyone, but: Joe Russo’s! If you have not seen them, don’t let anyone one tell you they are just another Dead cover band – these guys know how to play the blues! Edie Brickell, Pigeon’s Playing Ping Pong! Old Crow! The Revivalist! Trey A & DEREK TRUCKS, what! And that’s just day two!
We have big names like Bob Weir and Oteil, the Wolf Bros, John Popper, Keller Williams, David Shaw – just to highlight a few! Tedeschi Trucks Band! Marcus King (aka. the guitar slayer (such an amazing player)!) Soulive, Nahko & MFP. So many amazing moments of live music coming up!
This festival is known for its SUPPER jammy collaborations and once-in-a-life-time performances that have kept me going back year after year. It is also a blend of world-class music, local vendors, and community engagement.
2018 View from GA campground
You still have time –
You can still buy that ticket and take the ride. You won’t regret it this festival experience.
I really like the fact that you can buy single-day show and camping or parking passes, so if you can’t camp out all weekend then you can still get out to the mountains for just a few days. There are all kinds of options to get there and day parking.
If you are still looking for festival camp ideas, check out my other blogs and website for two-day shipping on some of that last-minute camp gear or plastic bag.
Most festivals I have been to this Summer have had a pretty strict bag policy these days and you should make sure you pay attention to the measurements of the bags and what types of fabrics they will allow for LOCKN’ too! Just like several other festivals that I went to this Summer would only allow see-through or plastic bags over a certain size. The info from the LOCKN’ site is as follows:
New Rules this year: Backpacks and large bags are prohibited in the Show Field.
Bag policy:
Empty hydration packs that are less than 5” deep are permitted. No “cargo-carrying” hydration packs.
Bags smaller than 8” x 11” x 5” are allowed
Fanny packs are allowed
Any bags larger than 8” x 11” x 5” must be clear or mesh and have no more than a single pocket
All bags will be searched upon entering the venue.
Other Prohibited items can be found on this list on the LOCKN’ site here.
This is the section of the festival that you do not want to miss!
The amazing team at Headcount organize the Participation Row which features non-profit organizations that are creating the change they want to see with grassroots promotion and the hard work of dedicated volunteers. Headcount.org
At Participation Row, festival-goers can REGISTER TO VOTE, do good and take positive action for multiple non-profits. Participation row has helped raised thousands of dollars for local nonprofits and allows people to engage with their community and make positive change. At this year’s LOCKN there will be free Ben & Jerry’s, a drawing for a signed D’Angelico guitar, and a silent auction to raise funds for participating charities. Over the years, the LOCKN family has taken over 25,000 actions and donated more than $435,000 to charities on Participation Row. So you must not miss the excitement! WIN a signed D’Angelico guitar
So after a day of festivaling if you are still vertical you might take a long walk into the woods where you will find Garcia’s Forest and though the walk is long, down a dirty and dusty road, what you find there will excite your senses, body, and mind! Lockn’s Garcia’s Forest
This year the line up includes some day performances as well as some amazing late-night performances and a dance party you won’t want to miss! Garcia’s Forest Line up
Rounding out the new additions is the Garcia’s Forest, a late-night dance party featuring endless good vibes and a kaleidoscope of energy. While the music of Jerry Garcia flows through the trees, the magic of the Garcia’s Forest will come alive.
3. The FOOD!
Somewhere in the middle of LOCKN’ there is my favorite food shelter at the festival. It is the Virginia LOCAL vendors who take my money and nourish my soul while I am enjoying the festival field. You definitely want to hold off until you find it, however, there are so many other good options for food at this festival you may be tempted to grab the first thing you pass and we are not talking just fried and on a stick. LOCKN’ has curated a great selection of food vendors to satisfy any diet or craving.
If you are a fan of HEADY merch, beautiful handcrafted wares, jewelry, clothes from world-class, local vendors you will find it all at the participating vendor booths.
Any time you have the opportunity to sleep under the stars out near the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is a real treat! When you add a musical line-up that includes so many acts that I am having serious FOMO because I just don’t know how I can DO and SEE it all. You really have something special.
LOCKN’ sort of reminds me of those first few Bonnaroo – that same wonderful feeling, where the vibe is kind and the people on the farm are all family. There is never a shortage of positive energy and friendly flowing vibes to remind you of how people really are when they are happy. The only exception is the Virginia mountains.
Did you know you can bring your bike to LOCKN’! YES! If you can handle going up hills. You can’t take them into the concert field, but you can ride them to and from and around the campgrounds. There are also some of the best private trails in Virginia. Trails are open 10am – 6pm on Thursday and 8am-6pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
There are all kinds of fun campground activities, including WaterLOCKN, and Yoga in the Forest.
There you have it the 5 reasons LOCKN’ is my favorite Summer music festival in Virginia!
Since Woodstock, for 50 years music festivals have captured our spirits, lifted our hopes and have given us a glimpse at humanity at their best. I hope to see you on the FARM!

Post-festival blues: 7 things that can help you feel better after surviving a music festival
Back to reality is never easy, but these tips can help ease the transition from the loophole…
If you are like me, the harrowing race back to work after a festival always takes its toll. Added to the multiple days of non-stop parting and camping, coupled with the lack of sleep, I have been feeling a bit off. We will always have our memories of the experience but currently, those good times are just that, a memory. Now that we are back to everything else, here are some tips to shake those BonnaBlues.
It is really important to keep the good energy flowing and continue to pass it on!
1. The number 1 thing is to continue to be inspired by all that positive energy and continue to pass it on!
People often look at me oddly and are quite surprised when I offer up a high-five or say a random happy day! Or when I am waiting on something or in a stressful situation I burst into song and dance. We all have our way of lightening the mood. None-the-less, I find being in good spirits is contagious and it is easier and more healthy to have a smile on your face rather than a frown. So close your eyes, go to your happy place…hum that song, whistle while you work and always remember…Keep going!
2. Get some sleep
The good news is the sun will not be roasting you as soon as it comes up in your tent and hopefully, you are back to your comfy bed. Make sure to get 8 hours of sleep to recharge and rest your bones. Research shows that consistently getting seven to eight hours of sleep per night is beneficial for adults. Any more or less can increase your risk for serious conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and even death. Getting enough quality sleep is also key to a healthy lifestyle.
3. Eat Something Nutritious
Now that it is no more festival food and beer for breakfast, you should practice a bit of self-care and eat some nutritious foods that can help your body recover.
Immediately after a festival marathon, you should replace depleted muscle glycogen by consuming carbohydrate-packed foods such as bananas, raisins, granola bars, energy bars, bagels and pita bread. Many sports drinks supply carbohydrate, too. I usually go for some gravy biscuits, but I have a tradition.
A smart recovery nutrition plan will decrease inflammation, improve energy/mood. Try getting plenty of omega-3s from salmon, fish or walnuts. Omega 3’s can help reduce joint swelling, while also providing a lean source of protein for muscle repair. Three great foods to eat are Chia seeds, hemp seeds and blueberries.
Chia Seeds
Slows the impact of sugar on the bloodstream which can help with post-race cravings, while also expanding and helping to maintain hydration levels. Also known as a great source of protein to help with muscle repair.
Post Roo Smoothie with Berries
Start with some pineapple, an orange and add a handful of blueberries and/or mixed berries to your favorite kind of milk. Next, add chia and hemp seeds for the perfect balance of carbs and healthy fats. This simple post Roo smoothie is great for boosting immunity which is down after the stress of the festival marathon, plus a study in Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition showed that eating blueberries accelerates muscle recovery and resulted in faster recovery rate when consumed before and after exercise. Not to mention all that vitamin C will also help with those Bonnaful symptoms.
As tempting as it may be to binge on Netflix and enjoy the air-conditioning, getting outside and soaking up some sun will really help boost your endorphins and help shake those blues.
Open all your shades and windows and get some fresh air. Walk as far as you had to walk to go back to your camp every day and keep soaking up that vitamin D. Walking fast for about 35 minutes a day five times a week, improved symptoms of mild to moderate depression. A preliminary study also found that exercise under bright light improved general mental health, social functioning, depressive symptoms, and vitality. This is all the more reason to get outside for a brisk walk in the sunshine.
And if not you can check out HASFit and find a workout to suit your fitness levels. Don’t let their smiling faces fool you, these two will have you begging for mercy, but they will make you feel and look so good. They have so many great videos like this one for lower back pain.
When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Since 1970, researchers have found that there are actually a lot of activities that can cause an endorphin boost in the body: meditation, laughing, eating chocolate, and even spicy food. And the exercise of course is another big way.
In a 2013 study, researchers showed that listening to upbeat music significantly improved the listener’s mood. I know you added some new favorties to your playlist so get up and get moving.
There ain’t nobody watching so time to DANCE!
Spotify has a great Bonnaroo 2020playlist and if you sign up you can listen for FREE with commercials.
Dance Today, Smile Today
Dancing is an excellent form of exercise because it not only burns calories and builds muscles, but it also contributes to an overall sense of happiness. Of course, all exercise releases endorphins, but dancing has an increased effect in this realm because it’s not only the physical activity but also the music, that affects the mind.
Endorphins are released when the body is forced to exert itself at a certain level. Dancing also affects the mind by contributing to a sense of satisfaction.
7. Start planning to go to another MUSIC FESTIVAL!
Now that the utopia is over until next year, the best thing you can do is to keep the memories alive, smile about them often and start planning for next year’s totem! Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
Ya’ll crack me up! I love all the creativity…keep it flowing!
LOVE, PEACE, and HAPPINESS to all.
